History: Garifuna Settlement Day is a public holiday in Belize celebrating the arrival of the first Garifuna people to Belize in 1802. The Garinagu, plural for Garifuna, are descendants of an Afro-indigenous population from the Caribbean island of St. Vincent who were exiled by the British to the coastlines of Central America, including Belize.
Traditions: The day is marked by vibrant parades, lively music such as Punta, and traditional dancing in towns and cities with significant Garifuna populations like Dangriga, Punta Gorda, and Belize City. Cultural reenactments of the first arrival by boat are performed through a ceremonial event known as "Yurumein," which showcases their historical journey.
Traditional foods such as Hudut (fish and coconut stew with mashed plantains) are prepared and shared among family members and visitors. Drumming is central to the celebrations with Garifuna drums being a focal point for music-making.
