Losar Holiday in Bhutan

Losar is the traditional New Year's festival celebrated in Bhutan, as well as Tibet and some regions of Nepal and India. It marks the beginning of the lunar new year, which usually falls in February or March.

History

The origins of Losar date back to the pre-Buddhist period in Tibet when Bon religion was widely practiced. The festival initially began as a winter incense-burning custom to appease local spirits, deities, and protectors. As Buddhism seeped into Tibetan culture, it took on new meanings associated with Buddhist beliefs.

Traditions

In Bhutan, Losar is an occasion rich with cultural significance and involves a variety of rituals meant to welcome the new year with positive energy and to drive away negative forces.

  • House Cleaning: Homes are thoroughly cleaned to rid them of any bad luck from the previous year.
  • Debts: People attempt to settle their debts and resolve disputes.
  • Offerings: Altars are adorned with offerings like fruits, cakes (known as khabsey), and beverages.
  • Religious Ceremonies: Families visit local monasteries, make offerings to deities, and participate in prayers.
  • Feasting: Traditional foods are prepared such as bjobchung (Bhutanese pancakes) and jasha maroo (spicy chicken).
  • Dress: People wear their finest clothes, often traditional Bhutanese attire.
  • Games and Music: Traditional games are played, songs are sung, and dances performed.

Activities

During Losar:

  • Families gather for festive meals.
  • Elders bestow blessings on the younger members.
  • People exchange gifts.
  • Lighthearted competitions like archery contests take place.

The celebration can last up to two weeks, filled with joyous activities that foster a sense of renewal and community spirit.
