Losar is the traditional New Year's festival celebrated in Bhutan, as well as Tibet and some regions of Nepal and India. It marks the beginning of the lunar new year, which usually falls in February or March.
The origins of Losar date back to the pre-Buddhist period in Tibet when Bon religion was widely practiced. The festival initially began as a winter incense-burning custom to appease local spirits, deities, and protectors.
