Descending Day of Lord Buddha in Bhutan (Lhabab Düchen)

Date and Significance: The Descending Day of Lord Buddha, known as Lhabab Düchen, is an important religious festival in Bhutan celebrated on the 22nd day of the ninth Bhutanese lunar month. The day commemorates the moment when Buddha Shakyamuni is said to have descended from heaven back to earth after spending a summer retreat in Heaven of Thirty-Three (Trayastrimsa) teaching his mother, Mayadevi, and other celestial beings.

History: According to Buddhist texts, Buddha ascended to Trayastrimsa Heaven at the age of 41 to give teachings to his mother's spirit and the gods residing there. After three months, he descended back to earth at a place called Sankasya on this auspicious day. His return is seen as a gesture of gratitude and filial piety.

Traditions: In Bhutan, Lhabab Düchen is observed with great reverence. The day is marked by:

  • Prayer and Religious Ceremonies: Monasteries, temples, and dzongs throughout Bhutan hold special prayers and rituals.

  • Acts of Merit: Devotees engage in various meritorious activities such as making offerings to temples, giving alms to monks, and helping those in need.

  • Visiting Sacred Sites: People visit sacred shrines and stupas to light butter lamps and pray for wellbeing.

  • Hoisting Prayer Flags: To honor the occasion and promote good fortune, prayer flags are hoisted across the country.

What People Do: On this day, individuals participate in various spiritual practices:

  • They take part in communal prayers.

  • Many followers observe fasting or adopt a vegetarian diet for the day.

  • It's common for people to refrain from negative actions and focus on performing good deeds.

The Descending Day of Lord Buddha is recognized as a national holiday in Bhutan; thus government offices, schools, and other institutions are closed. The festival plays an essential role in preserving Bhutan's rich cultural heritage while promoting spiritual values among its citizens.
