Dashain in Bhutan

Dashain, also known as Durga Puja, is a significant Hindu festival celebrated in many South Asian countries, including Bhutan. It is particularly important to the Lhotshampa community, a Nepali-speaking minority in Bhutan.

History and Traditions:

The festival symbolizes the victory of good over evil and commemorates the triumph of the goddess Durga over the demon king Mahishasura. Historically, Dashain aligns with the end of the monsoon season and is deeply rooted in Hindu mythology.

Celebrations:

During this 15-day festival, with the most important days being the first, seventh, eighth, ninth, and tenth, Bhutanese people engage in various traditional activities:

  • Puja (Worship): Devotees offer prayers and perform rituals to honor Goddess Durga.
  • Animal Sacrifice: Some celebrate by sacrificing animals like goats and buffaloes as offerings to Durga.
  • Tika and Jamara: On the tenth day called 'Vijaya Dashami,' elders put tika (a mixture of rice, yogurt, and vermillion) on the forehead of younger relatives for blessings along with Jamara (germinated barley or corn seeds).
  • Family Gatherings: Families come together to celebrate, share festive meals, exchange gifts, and blessings.
  • Cultural Events: Traditional dances and cultural programs are often organized.

Dashain provides a time for Bhutanese Hindus to seek blessings for prosperity and health while engaging in cultural preservation through festive traditions.
