Epiphany is a Christian holiday celebrated globally on January 6 each year. It commemorates two events recorded in the Bible: the three wise men’s visit to baby Jesus; and Jesus’ baptism.

Epiphany in Bolivia

Epiphany, also known as The Feast of The Three Kings or "Día de Reyes" in Spanish, is celebrated in Bolivia on January 6th. This Christian feast day commemorates the visit of the Magi – the three wise men – to the baby Jesus after his birth, signifying the revelation of God incarnate as Jesus Christ.

History and Traditions

The traditions surrounding Epiphany in Bolivia have deep religious roots. Historically, it marks the end of the Christmas festivities and is considered the Twelfth Night, concluding the Twelve Days of Christmas.

  • Three Kings' Cake (Rosca de Reyes): A central tradition is sharing a special sweet bread called "Rosca de Reyes". Hidden within this cake is a small figurine representing baby Jesus. The person who finds it is said to be blessed and must host a party on February 2nd, known as Candlemas Day or "Día de la Candelaria".

  • Gifts: Following the example of the Magi bringing gifts to Jesus, children often receive presents on this day which they put out their shoes for the Three Kings to fill with gifts.

  • Religious Services: Many Bolivians attend church services to celebrate Epiphany with Masses often including special blessings and processions.

What People Do

On Epiphany, families come together for festive meals, sharing Rosca de Reyes and other traditional foods. Children eagerly await their gifts from the Three Kings. In some regions, parades or processions take place where individuals may dress up as kings and reenact their journey to see baby Jesus. It's a day rich with cultural significance, reflecting both religious devotion and community bonding in Bolivia.
