Remembrance Day in Bermuda

Remembrance Day in Bermuda is a public holiday observed each year on November 11th, coinciding with Armistice Day and Veterans Day in other countries. This day marks the armistice signed between the Allies of World War I and Germany at Compiègne, France, for the cessation of hostilities on the Western Front, which took effect at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month of 1918.

History and Traditions

The history of Remembrance Day in Bermuda reflects its British heritage. The island has a long military history and has been involved in various conflicts, including both World Wars.

On Remembrance Day, Bermudians honor those who have served and lost their lives in wars and military conflicts. Tradition includes:

  • Two-Minute Silence: At 11 a.m., Bermudians observe a two-minute silence to remember those who died. This act of remembrance dates back to King George V’s request for a moment of silence to be observed on November 11, 1919.

  • Wreath-Laying Ceremonies: Ceremonies are held at war memorials across the island, with government officials, veterans' associations, and service organizations laying wreaths to honor the fallen.

  • Church Services: Special church services are conducted with prayers for peace and for those who served.

  • Parades: Military parades often feature current members of Bermuda's Regiment, veterans from various conflicts, cadet corps, and other service organizations marching through streets leading to war memorials or other designated places for commemorative events.

Activities on Remembrance Day

On this solemn day:

  • Many Bermudians attend remembrance services or watch parades.
  • Uniformed services including police officers and sea cadets participate in official ceremonies.
  • Schools often hold special assemblies leading up to Remembrance Day educating students about Bermuda’s role in global conflicts.

The Royal British Legion Bermuda branch plays an active role in organizing events around Remembrance Day. Poppies made by veterans are distributed throughout the island as symbols of remembrance – inspired by John McCrae's poem "In Flanders Fields." Funds raised from poppy sales help support veterans and their families.
