Bermuda Day in Bermuda

History and Significance: Bermuda Day is a public holiday in Bermuda that marks the unofficial start of summer. It has its roots in the British Empire's celebration of Empire Day, which commemorated Queen Victoria's birthday and the unity of the empire. Over time, it evolved to become a celebration of Bermudian heritage and culture.

Traditions: One of the most significant traditions on Bermuda Day is the annual parade featuring music, dance, floats, and gombey dancers—a unique blend of African, Indigenous American, Caribbean, and British cultures. Gombeys are troupes of dancers who wear vibrant costumes with masks and perform rhythmic drumming and dancing.

Another key tradition is the Bermuda Day Half Marathon Derby. This road running event attracts participants from across the island who run from Somerset to Hamilton. It began in 1909 as a friendly wager between two men but has since become a competitive and communal event that draws large crowds.

Modern Celebrations: On Bermuda Day, residents dress in Bermudian colors—blue and pink—and partake in various festivities including picnics, beach outings, boating, and swimming. As it marks the start of summer activities, it's also traditionally seen as the first day when locals will go into the sea after winter.

The holiday serves to strengthen national pride and brings together communities to celebrate their shared identity through parades, sports events, music performances, and family gatherings across the islands.
