Ramadan is a period of prayer, reflection and fasting for many Muslims worldwide. It is the ninth month in the Islamic calendar.

Ramadan Start in Bahrain

Day: In Bahrain, as in other Islamic countries, the start of Ramadan is determined by the lunar Islamic calendar and the sighting of the new moon. The exact day varies each year and is announced by religious authorities. The beginning of Ramadan involves a communal sense of anticipation as people prepare to embark on a month of fasting, prayer, and reflection.

History: Ramadan commemorates the month in which Muslims believe the Quran was first revealed to the Prophet Muhammad. This holy period is deeply rooted in Islamic history and tradition, dating back over 14 centuries.

Traditions: On the day Ramadan begins, Bahraini Muslims engage in several traditional practices:

  • Fasting: From dawn until sunset, adults will abstain from eating or drinking. This fast (sawm) is one of the Five Pillars of Islam and is obligatory for all adult Muslims, with exceptions for those who are ill or traveling, among others.

  • Suhoor and Iftar: The Suhoor meal is consumed before dawn, and Iftar meals break the fast at sunset. These meals are often enjoyed with family and friends.

  • Prayer: Increased devotion during Ramadan includes performing extra prayers at night called Taraweeh, which are held in mosques throughout Bahrain.

  • Charity: Known as Zakat and Sadaqah, acts of charity are highly emphasized during Ramadan as a way to purify wealth and help those in need.

What people do: During this time, daily life in Bahrain adjusts significantly:

  • People often spend more time reading the Quran and engaging in personal reflection.

  • Work hours may be reduced to accommodate fasting.

  • Social gatherings centered around Iftar bring communities together each evening.

  • Special TV programs and series are broadcasted throughout the month that cater to family viewing.

The commencement of Ramadan fosters a unique atmosphere across Bahrain with an emphasis on piety, community bonding, spiritual growth, and cultural traditions.
