Millions of Orthodox Christians around the world often celebrate Easter Sunday at a different time to the date set by many western churches.

Easter Sunday in Bulgaria

Easter Sunday in Bulgaria, known as Великден (Velikden), is one of the most significant and widely celebrated religious holidays in the country. It follows the Orthodox Christian calendar, which often results in a different date for Easter than that observed by Western Christian churches.

History and Traditions:

Bulgaria's Easter traditions have deep historical roots intertwined with Christian beliefs and local customs. The holiday commemorates the resurrection of Jesus Christ and is celebrated with various rituals that have been passed down through generations.

  • Preparations: The Holy Week leading up to Easter Sunday is marked by fasting and attending church services. Bulgarians also engage in thorough house cleaning to prepare for the holiday.

  • Painting Eggs: On Holy Thursday or Saturday, families participate in painting eggs, typically starting with red ones to symbolize the blood of Christ. These eggs are then used for games and as gifts.

  • Midnight Service: The most solemn part of Easter celebrations is the midnight church service on Saturday evening. At midnight, church bells ring, and people gather outside churches with lit candles symbolizing the light of Christ's resurrection.

What People Do on Easter Sunday:

  • Egg Fights: Known as "egg tapping" or "egg cracking," people lightly tap their painted eggs against those of others. The owner of the last uncracked egg is believed to have a year of good luck.

  • Easter Meal: A festive meal takes place on Sunday featuring dishes like lamb, kozunak (a sweet bread), and other foods abstained from during Lent.

  • Visiting Relatives: It's customary for Bulgarians to visit family members and friends throughout Easter day, bringing painted eggs and exchanging greetings such as "Христос воскресе!" (Christ has risen!) followed by the response "Воистину воскресе!" (Indeed He has risen!).
