Easter Monday in Bulgaria

Easter Monday, known as Велики понеделник (Veliki ponedelnik) in Bulgarian, is a significant holiday following Easter Sunday, which marks the resurrection of Jesus Christ according to Christian belief. As in many other countries with Christian traditions, in Bulgaria, Easter Monday is a continuation of the celebrations that begin on Easter Sunday.

History and Traditions:

  • Easter Eggs: A central tradition carried over from Easter Sunday is the decoration and exchange of Easter eggs. Bulgarians often engage in egg tapping or egg fights where individuals tap their eggs against those of others to see which one will crack first.
  • Bread: Another tradition involves baking and sharing a special type of Easter bread called 'kozunak', which is a sweet, braided loaf.
  • Church Services: While most of the religious observances occur on Good Friday and Easter Sunday, some attend church services on Easter Monday as well.
  • Family Gatherings: Families often gather for extended lunches or dinners to continue the celebration with traditional foods like roasted lamb.

Modern Celebrations:

On this public holiday, Bulgarians enjoy a day off from work. Many take advantage of the long weekend for short vacations or trips to visit family members. Picnics and outdoor activities are common if the weather permits since spring is usually well underway by this time.

While less commercially significant than in some Western countries, Easter Monday remains an important time for relaxation and family in Bulgaria's calendar of festivities.
