Day of the Flemish Community in Belgium

Date: July 11th

Also Known As: Flemish Community Day or the Feast of the Flemish Community

History:

The Day of the Flemish Community commemorates the Battle of the Golden Spurs (Guldensporenslag) which took place on July 11, 1302. In this battle, Flemish infantrymen, consisting mainly of commoners and guildsmen, defeated a professional French army of knights near Kortrijk (Courtrai). The victory became a symbol of Flemish cultural pride and resistance against foreign rule.

Traditions:

On this day, various festivities are organized throughout Flanders and by Flemish communities around the world. The celebrations typically include:

  • Flag Raising: The official flag of Flanders is displayed prominently.
  • Cultural Events: Concerts, theater performances, and exhibitions showcasing Flemish culture and history.
  • Official Ceremonies: Speeches and award presentations by political leaders to honor distinguished citizens.
  • Public Gatherings: Parades, family-friendly activities, and local gatherings.

What People Do:

The Day of the Flemish Community is a public holiday in Flanders but not in other parts of Belgium. Those who observe the day might:

  • Participate in or attend local events and celebrations.
  • Reflect on Flemish identity and heritage.
  • Enjoy a day off work or school (in Flanders), spending time with family or friends.

While not as widely celebrated as Belgium's National Day on July 21st, it remains an important occasion for members of the Flemish community to celebrate their cultural identity within Belgium.
