Ramadan is a period of prayer, reflection and fasting for many Muslims worldwide. It is the ninth month in the Islamic calendar.

Ramadan Start in Bangladesh

Day: The start of Ramadan in Bangladesh is based on the lunar Islamic calendar, and thus, it varies each year. The beginning is traditionally determined by the sighting of the new moon, which signifies the commencement of the 9th month in the Islamic calendar.

History: The observance of Ramadan as a holy month for Muslims stems from its mention in the Quran as the period when the holy book was first revealed to Prophet Muhammad. Ramadan has been observed by Muslims around the world for over 14 centuries as a time for fasting, prayer, reflection, and community.

Traditions: In Bangladesh, like in other Muslim-majority countries, traditions during Ramadan include:

  • Sawm (Fasting): From dawn (Fajr) until sunset (Maghrib), Muslims abstain from food, drink, smoking, and marital relations. The pre-dawn meal before fasting begins is known as 'Sehri,' and the meal to break the fast at sunset is called 'Iftar.'

  • Taraweeh Prayers: Special nightly prayers called Taraweeh are held in mosques throughout the country where long portions of the Quran are recited.

  • Charity: Known as Zakat and Sadaqah, acts of charity are highly emphasized during this month. People are encouraged to be more generous and help those in need.

  • Reflection & Community: It's a time for self-reflection and strengthening community ties. Families often gather to break their fasts together.

On the first day of Ramadan, people in Bangladesh engage in personal reflection and communal worship. Mosques become focal points for communal prayers and activities. It's also common for people to exchange greetings such as "Ramadan Mubarak" or "Ramadan Kareem" to wish each other a blessed Ramadan.
