Maha Shivaratri is a significant Hindu festival celebrated annually in honor of Lord Shiva, one of the principal deities in Hinduism. In Bangladesh, where a minority Hindu community resides, this festival is observed with religious fervor and devotion.

Date and Significance:

  • Maha Shivaratri typically falls on the 13th night and 14th day of the lunar month Phalguna, which corresponds to February or March in the Gregorian calendar.
  • The festival symbolizes the overcoming of darkness and ignorance.
  • It is believed to be the day when Shiva performs the heavenly dance of creation, preservation, and destruction.

History:

  • The history behind Maha Shivaratri includes various legends. One popular belief is that it is the night when Shiva performed the Tandava Nritya or cosmic dance.
  • According to another legend, it was on this day that Shiva married Parvati.

Traditions:

  • Devotees observe fasts (upavasa) and perform ritual worship (puja) to Lord Shiva.
  • Many visit temples dedicated to Lord Shiva to offer prayers. The most famous temple for this celebration in Bangladesh is Chandranath Temple in Sitakunda, Chittagong.
  • The night vigil or jaagaran is maintained as it's believed that Lord Shiva saved the universe from darkness and ignorance on this night.

Activities:

  • Followers often bathe early in the morning and wear new clothes after their holy bath.
  • They may pour milk or water (abhishekam) over Shivlingas while chanting "Om Namah Shivaya" or other mantras.
  • Bilva leaves (bel patra), which are considered sacred to Lord Shiva, are offered.
  • Some also meditate as part of their spiritual practice on this day.

Maha Shivaratri provides an opportunity for Hindu devotees in Bangladesh to express their reverence towards Lord Shiva through various traditional rituals and community gatherings. Despite being a minority population, Hindus observe this festival with great enthusiasm.
