Halloween, as celebrated in many Western countries on October 31st, is not a traditional holiday in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The country, with its rich history influenced by Slavic culture and the Ottoman Empire, has its own set of customs and folklore traditions. Nonetheless, the influence of globalization has led to a growing awareness and some level of celebration of Halloween, especially among younger generations and in urban areas.
Traditional Bosnian culture has its own calendar of events tied to the seasons, religion (primarily Islam and Christianity), and pre-Christian Slavic rituals. The concept of Halloween as known in the United States or Western Europe does not have historical roots in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
In recent years, elements of Halloween – such as costume parties and pumpkin carving – have started to appear, largely influenced by American pop culture. These activities are mainly seen in larger cities like Sarajevo or Mostar where there is more exposure to international customs.
