Date: November 21
History: Dayton Peace Agreement Day commemorates the peace accord signed in 1995 that put an end to the three-and-a-half-year-long Bosnian War. The negotiations were held at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base near Dayton, Ohio, USA, hence the name. The agreement was formally signed in Paris on December 14, 1995. It divided Bosnia and Herzegovina into two autonomous entities — the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina and Republika Srpska.
Traditions: Since it is a symbolic day for peace and reconciliation, there are often formal ceremonies including laying of flowers at memorials, speeches by political leaders, and educational events discussing the history of the conflict and the importance of peace. In some instances, concerts or cultural events may be organized to celebrate peace and unity.
What People Do:
The day serves as a reminder of both past sufferings and hopes for a peaceful future in Bosnia and Herzegovina. However, it's important to note that while some parts of the country might observe this day solemnly, others may not officially recognize it due to differing perspectives on the war and its aftermath.
