Originally known as Foundation Day, it commemorated the arrival of British settlers and troops at Fremantle on June 1, 1829, and their subsequent settlement in areas around Perth. In 2012, to acknowledge and show respect to the original Aboriginal inhabitants of Western Australia, Foundation Day was officially changed to Western Australia Day.
