National Day/May 1810 Revolution in Argentina

History: The May 1810 Revolution, also known as the May Revolution, was a series of events that took place from May 18 to May 25, 1810, in Buenos Aires. This period marked the beginning of the Argentine War of Independence. It was a result of both internal and external influences, such as the weakening of Spanish authority due to Napoleon's invasion of Spain and the rise of revolutionary ideas among the criollo population.

During this week, local residents and prominent figures convened at the Cabildo (town council) to discuss and decide on the formation of a local government to replace the Spanish Viceroyalty. This ultimately led to the establishment of the Primera Junta, Argentina’s first independent government.

National Day: Argentina's National Day is celebrated on May 25th each year to commemorate these revolutionary events. It is known as "Día de la Revolución de Mayo" or "Día de la Patria" (Homeland Day).

Traditions:

  • Public Celebrations: Parades, concerts, and public speeches take place in major cities throughout Argentina. The most significant events occur in Buenos Aires around Plaza de Mayo.
  • Historical Reenactments: Actors often stage reenactments of key moments from the revolution.
  • Cultural Events: Cultural expressions like folkloric music and dance are showcased.
  • Traditional Food: People enjoy traditional Argentine foods such as locro (a hearty stew), empanadas, pastelitos (sweet pastries), and hot chocolate with churros.

What People Do: On this national holiday, Argentines enjoy a day off work. Many attend or participate in civic ceremonies or visit historical monuments relevant to Independence. Families typically gather for meals featuring traditional dishes; schools and community groups often organize activities that highlight Argentina's history and culture. Flags are prominently displayed as a symbol of national pride.
