Day of Respect for Cultural Diversity in Argentina is observed on October 12th. Originally known as "Día de la Raza" (Day of the Race), it was a commemoration of the encounter between Europeans and the Indigenous peoples of the Americas following Christopher Columbus's arrival in 1492. However, to acknowledge and respect the diverse cultures within Argentina, particularly its indigenous communities, and to promote reflection on intercultural dialogue, the name was changed in 2010.
The day was first established during the presidency of Hipólito Yrigoyen in 1917 under the name "Día de la Raza", mirroring similar celebrations throughout Latin America and Spain. Over time, there has been a shift to recognize the impact of colonization on indigenous peoples. This led to a rebranding under President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner's administration, making it a day that celebrates cultural diversity rather than European conquest.
The Day of Respect for Cultural Diversity provides an opportunity for Argentinians to learn about, honor, and engage with the country's rich tapestry of native cultures.
