History: Peace Day in Angola, known locally as "Dia da Paz e da ReconciliaĆ§Ć£o," commemorates the end of the Angolan Civil War. The war, which began shortly after Angola gained independence from Portugal in 1975, lasted for 27 years and officially ended on April 4th, 2002. The day marks the signing of the peace accord between the People's Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) and the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA), which brought an end to one of Africa's longest and most brutal conflicts.
