Yerkrapah Day in Armenia
Yerkrapah Day is observed annually on May 8 in Armenia to honor the members of the Yerkrapah Volunteer Union (YVU), a group of veterans who played a significant role during the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. The day commemorates the courage and sacrifice of these volunteers.
History
The Yerkrapah Volunteer Union was formed during the early 1990s, amid escalating tensions between Armenia and Azerbaijan over the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region.
It was officially founded by Vazgen Sargsyan, who later became the Prime Minister of Armenia before his assassination in 1999.
The volunteers were instrumental in defending Armenian positions and contributing to what many Armenians consider a victory in the conflict.
Traditions
On Yerkrapah Day:
Ceremonies are held to pay tribute to those who lost their lives in the Nagorno-Karabakh war and to celebrate the bravery of all Yerkrapah volunteers.
Government officials, military personnel, and citizens lay flowers at memorials and visit cemeteries where Yerkrapah members are buried.
Speeches and military parades may take place, highlighting the unity and strength of Armenian forces during times of conflict.
Activities
Public gatherings feature stories from veterans recounting their experiences from the war.
Patriotic concerts or cultural events may be organized to foster national pride and remembrance.
Educational programs are sometimes conducted to inform younger generations about this chapter in Armenian history.
