Victory and Peace Day in Armenia is observed on May 9th each year. This day commemorates two significant events in Armenian history:
Victory Over Nazi Germany (1945): It marks the anniversary of the capitulation of Nazi Germany to the Soviet Union in 1945 at the end of World War II. Many Armenians fought in the ranks of the Soviet Army, and this day serves as a remembrance for their sacrifices and the victory over fascism.
Shushi Liberation (1992): The day also celebrates the liberation of Shushi during the Nagorno-Karabakh War. The capture of Shushi was a turning point in the conflict and is seen as a symbol of Armenian resilience and military success.
On Victory and Peace Day, Armenians participate in various activities to honor veterans and those who lost their lives:
The dual commemoration represents both remembrance of past sacrifices made during World War II as well as national pride from more recent history linked with Nagorno-Karabakh.
