Remembrance Day of the Oppressed, also known as Yeghern (Great Crime) Remembrance Day, is a national day of remembrance in Armenia that takes place on April 24. This day commemorates the victims of the Armenian Genocide that began on this date in 1915, when hundreds of Armenian intellectuals were arrested and later executed by Ottoman authorities.
The Ottoman Empire systematically exterminated approximately 1.5 million Armenians through massacres, forced death marches, and starvation. The date April 24 marks the beginning of these atrocities and has since become a symbol for Armenians worldwide, representing not only mourning but also a call for recognition and justice for what they consider a genocide.
On Remembrance Day of the Oppressed, Armenians participate in various activities to honor those who lost their lives:
Apart from participating in memorial services or visiting monuments dedicated to the genocide victims, many Armenians use this day to engage with their community through gatherings and discussions. They also often partake in political rallies or campaigns aimed at raising awareness about the genocide internationally and lobbying for its recognition by governments around the globe.
