Genocide Remembrance Day in Armenia

Genocide Remembrance Day, also known as Armenian Genocide Memorial Day, is observed annually in Armenia on April 24. This day is dedicated to remembering and honoring the estimated 1.5 million Armenians who were killed during the Armenian Genocide that began on this date in 1915 under the Ottoman Empire.

History

April 24 was chosen to commemorate the genocide because it marks the start of the mass arrests, deportation, and killing of Armenians in Constantinople (now Istanbul) by Ottoman authorities. The day has been officially commemorated since 1967 when the Tsitsernakaberd memorial complex was erected in Yerevan, Armenia's capital.

Traditions

On Genocide Remembrance Day, people across Armenia and those in the widespread Armenian diaspora participate in various commemorative activities:

  • Visit to Tsitsernakaberd: People gather at the Tsitsernakaberd Memorial Complex, which includes a monument and a museum dedicated to the victims of the genocide. It is common for individuals to lay flowers around the eternal flame situated at the center of the memorial.

  • Minute of Silence: At 19:15 (7:15 PM), reflecting on the year when events began, Armenians observe a minute of silence to honor those who lost their lives.

  • Marches and Demonstrations: In Yerevan and other cities around the world with significant Armenian populations, there are often marches or demonstrations calling for recognition of the genocide by governments and international organizations.

  • Cultural Events: Concerts, exhibitions, lectures, and other cultural events are organized to reflect on Armenian history and culture as well as educate people about the events of 1915.

  • Educational Programs: Schools include lessons about this tragic period in their curriculum around this date to ensure that future generations understand their history.

The central theme throughout these activities is remembrance and education with a strong emphasis on ensuring that such atrocities do not happen again.
