National Day in the United Arab Emirates (UAE)

History

National Day in the UAE is celebrated annually on December 2nd. This day marks the UAE's formal nationalization from British Protectorate Treaties which then ended on December 1, 1971, and the eventual unification of the seven emirates which occurred on December 2, 1971. These seven emirates include Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Fujairah, Ras Al Khaimah, and Umm Al Quwain.

The founding father of the UAE, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, played a crucial role in bringing together these emirates to form a single country. The Union House in Dubai is where the constitution was officially signed.

Traditions

The National Day involves various cultural activities that reflect the UAE heritage and traditions. Emiratis adorn their homes with national flags and illuminations. Public places are decorated with red, green, white, and black colors representing the UAE flag.

Formal events include parades showcasing military processions and cultural displays that highlight Emirati heritage through folk dances like Al Ayala. Fireworks are a common spectacle in major cities such as Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

Activities

People participate in car rallies featuring vehicles decorated with UAE flags and portraits of UAE leaders. Families enjoy picnics or gather for feasts featuring traditional dishes such as Harees and Ghuzi.

Schools organize special programs where children dress in national colors and perform dances or recite poems celebrating their country's history. Retailers offer National Day-themed sales while concerts with popular artists are held around the nation.

Public Life

National Day is a public holiday in the UAE; government offices and most businesses are closed. Citizens engage in a variety of public events including free concerts, fireworks shows, sports tournaments, and traditional entertainment such as falconry displays or camel races to celebrate their national pride.
