Commemoration Day, previously known as Martyrs' Day, is observed on November 30th each year in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). It was first introduced in 2015 by President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan. The day honors the Emirati martyrs who have sacrificed their lives for the sovereignty, pride, and security of their country while serving in the military and civil services.
The date was chosen to mark the anniversary of the death of Salem Suhail bin Khamis, who died on November 30, 1971, during the battle of Greater Tunb against Iranian forces. Over time, it has become a day to remember all Emiratis who have died in service.
On Commemoration Day, the UAE flags are flown at half-mast until after Asr prayer (mid-afternoon), after which they are raised again. A minute of silence is observed at 11:30 am across the nation followed by prayers for the martyrs. Various official ceremonies and events are also held across the UAE to honor these heroes.
Citizens visit memorials and monuments dedicated to fallen soldiers. Schools and government institutions hold educational sessions to instill patriotism and gratitude among young Emiratis towards those who have given their lives for their country.
Many people attend commemorative events or participate in community gatherings. Families of martyrs receive visits from officials as a sign of respect and solidarity. Social media is often used as a platform to express gratitude and remembrance. The day serves as a reminder to all citizens of the sacrifices made for national security and unity.
