History and Significance: National Day in Andorra, also known as Our Lady of Meritxell Day, is a public holiday dedicated to the patron saint of Andorra, Our Lady of Meritxell. According to tradition, a statue of the Virgin Mary was discovered under miraculous circumstances in the town of Meritxell during the Middle Ages. This event led to the Virgin Mary being declared the patroness of Andorra. The original Romanesque statue was unfortunately destroyed in a fire in 1972, but a replica can be found in the new sanctuary built by renowned architect Ricardo Bofill.
